In 1975 he was elected IEEE Fellow for his "contributions to the development of pulse-code modulation systems."〔 He received the IEEE Communication Society Armstrong Technical Achievement Award in 1988;〔 the C&C Prize in 1991; and the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal in 1994. In 1998 he was elected Member of the National Academy of Engineering (Electronics) for his contributions to "the development and implementation of international communications facilities via undersea lightwave cables."〔
